YERBA BUENA GARDENS/SOMA

SF Map: N, 9

The area south of Market Street has recently been transformed from vacant warehouses on industrial lots into a fashionable artists' community often compared to New York's SoHo District, hence the name SoMa. The South of Market district has emerged as the art and nightlife center of San Francisco and offers a collection of restaurants, cafes, galleries, bars and nightclubs.

Yerba Buena Gardens, the city's urban redevelopment plan, includes the Center for the Arts, a visual and performing arts complex, 5.5 acres of gardens with an outdoor performance area and a Martin Luther King Memorial. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is now the second largest modern art museum in the United States.

Named after the late mayor George Moscone, Moscone Center is San Francisco's main convention and exhibit

facility. The vast underground hall is the largest column-free space in the City and includes 31 meeting rooms, an 836-foot-long exhibit hall, the Esplanade Ballroom and the newest addition to the complex, Moscone North which added 181,000 square feet of meeting space just across the street.
