San Francisco's fishing fleet is docked on the Jefferson Street promendade. Take an early morning stroll down "Fish Alley" (Jefferson between Hyde and Jones) to view the fishermen
at work.
Family entertainment is the specialty along Jefferson Street with attractions such as the Wax Museum, Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum, and the Medieval Dungeon. Experience life at sea in a prior era by going below on the World War II submarine, USS Pampanito, at Pier 45.
A variety of specialty shops and restaurants are located at the Anchorage and The Cannery (a former Del Monte peach-packing plant). Ghirardelli Square, once home to the world-famous chocolate factory, has been renovated to an open-air center filled with specialty shops, international restaurants, an ice cream parlor and displays of the original chocolate-making machines.
Fisherman's Wharf is famous for its Italian seafood restaurants with waterfront views. Vendors along Jefferson Street sell Dungeness crab from steaming cauldrons and walkaway seafood cocktails. Since 1849, the Boudin family has baked the original San Francisco sourdough bread; clam chowder in a sourdough bowl is a signature San Francisco dish.
